The Wilderness Advanced Life Support is our most advanced course. WALS helps advanced care medical providers apply current medical knowledge and critical thinking for use in remote/resource challenged patient care settings.

Koulutuksen kuvaus

Course registration closes three (3) weeks before the start of each course. A booking fee is payable upon registration, which is only refundable if the course is cancelled.
The language of instruction and learning materials for the course are in English.

Course Objectives 

  • Understand the challenges and limitations of working in remote and low-resource patient care settings.
  • Explain principles of preventive care for patients and team members when faced by environmental challenges.
  • Perform an accurate patient assessment when access to advanced diagnostics are not available.
  • Utilize useful medical and basic rescue equipment often available in remote and low-resource patient care settings.
  • Through case studies and patient assessment drills, demonstrate decision making for treatments and evacuations in remote and low-resource patient care settings.
  • Determine which medications and equipment might be useful and appropriate in remote and low-resource patient care settings.

Requirements 
Participants must be ALS-trained with current certification, i.e.: Paramedic or ALS-trained field provider,  Registered Nurse, Advanced Practice Provider (NP or PA), or Physician (MD or DO). Others are admitted on a case-by-case basis.

Koulutuksen sisältö

Curriculum
Curriculum evolves based on new scientific data, discussions, and new medical technology. Class involves lecture, discussion, case study review, patient assessment drills, and ALS skills labs. All content is reviewed, validated, and in keeping with sound scientific principles.

Evaluation 
This course is pass/fail. 100% attendance is mandatory. Evaluation is based on practical patient simulations, hands-on activities, and a written test. WMA International is committed to making reasonable accommodation for any student with special needs.

Instructers

Jeffrey Isaac, PA-C, WEMT, Captain. Jeff is a licensed physician associate and WEMT with a particular interest in backcountry and marine medicine. His 45 years in emergency medicine includes service as an ambulance and fire/rescue crewman, professional ski patroller, SAR medic, ships medical officer, and PA in rural emergency departments and remote clinics. He has also been a senior instructor and course director with the Hurricane Outward Bound School and has worked as mate and licensed captain aboard sail training vessels from New England to Trinidad.

Jeff currently practices in Crested Butte, Colorado, where he also serves as a team leader and medical officer for Crested Butte Mountain Rescue. Jeff is the author of The Outward Bound Wilderness First Aid Handbook and co-author of Wilderness and Rescue Medicine, used as course texts worldwide. He served as Curriculum Director for WMAI™ for more than 25 years and continues to teach WMAI courses through his own company, Medical Officer, Ltd. Jeff is the principal author and instructor for Offshore Emergency Medicine.

Erik Forsythe, Flight Paramedic. Erik works as a Flight Paramedic in western Colorado and lives in the small but mighty ski town of Crested Butte. He has been working EMS since 1992 with experience in Mountain Rescue, Ski Patrol, Ambulance, Fire, and Flight services and has held the positions of Ski Patrol Director and EMS Chief. Erik has been teaching wilderness medicine programs since 1994 and joined the staff of Wilderness Medical Associates® in 2000.
